Hi,

Example:

Tom: Hi Mary, I bought 333 yesterday.

Mary: You bought 333 what? 333 chickens? 333 cars? 333 books?

Best wishes, Clive:

I've never heard it used that way, Kekel.

You'd have to have an "and."

A: There were 333 apples and 217 peaches.
B: 333 and what? What wast the number of peaches again?

Hey, I've found where I read this sentence. Check it out on Linguagum!

The sentence is Three hundred and thirty-three what.

See ya, folks

Ah. That's not the same as "forgetting." That's a prompt.

Young boy, apologizing to neighbor: I'm sorry.
Mother, promting: I'm sorry for WHAT.
Your boy: I'm sorry I stood all of your garden gnomes on their heads.

You can also use it like this:

A: He paid 33 hundred dollars for his new car.
B: He paid 33 WHAT? 33 hundred?
A: Oh sorry, I meant 33 thousand! Bit of a difference there, huh?

  • Three hundred and thirty-three.
  • Three hundred and thirty-three what?
  • Three hundred and thirty-three thousand.
  • Three hundred and thirty-three thousand nine hundred and seventy-five

The exercise builds up the whole number 333,975 in steps.
What?  is a prompt for the student to say thousand.

If we were drilling the students on the word hundred, we would say, "Read the number 452".
The student would start by saying, "Four".
We would say, "Four what?"  [Prompt for the word hundred.]
The student would answer, "Four hundred".

And so on.

CJ

Edit:  Whoops!  For some reason your answer wasn't visible to me, GG.
