Is the "a" affected by the "in" in the parentheses?
Which sentence is correct?

He has committed a (in the eyes of the community) horrible misbehavior.

If this kind of awkward construction is avoided (as it should be!), the question doesn't arise!

I would write a (in the ...) horrible ..., but neither is very good, as noted above.
