I believe a unique is correct because  unique is not capitalized, and unique is an improper noun.Yes [Y]

(You're not thinking of "eunuch"? They can be quite improper. Well, verbally, anyway.)

I think A UNIQUE is correct because UNIQUE starts a long "U"
sound so "U" isn't a vowel sound in here
