Art Link Letter, famous for having been the MC for the TV program "Children say the darnedest things," was asked during a recent appearance on a national talk show if he is fearful of dying. He was asked this question because he is now ninety. His reply was "No, but I do fear the way most of us must die" He currently has a book in print ,"Growing old isn't for sissies".
This set me to thinking. I vividly recall cradling my Mother's head in my arms as she drew
her last tortured breath. It was a traumatic experience, and I shall carry the memory of it to my grave. This is not unusual, .many of us have witnessed a loved one die.
Less than 20% of us will be fortunate enough to die in our sleep. The majority of us will die following a prolonged illness.
For fear of sounding blasphemous, l should think that a merciful God would have provided a better way for us to depart this life. A case in point is the tree leaf. Its death and rebirth is a beautiful and enriching happening. Few sights exceed the beauty of autumn foliage, yet this panorama of unsurpassed color is created by the death of a living thing.

My Gran lived a long and productive life and it is just not fair how she died either. Her painful death was not a fitting end to a life well lived.
Yes, our final journey in this life should be peaceful, I think that is the way it was meant to be. But we, humankind, have interfered with the natural balance of things for so long that it is affecting the balance of life and death.
