Hi anon.,

I unlocked your post so you can get some replies.

How about telling us what you think about the poems? Then we can start a little discussion.

thanksSmile [:)]..so first about the poem by walt whitman 'when i heard the learned astronomer'..its the most beautiful piece of poetry i've ever read..so simple and yet so deep in its meaning. what i think about this poem is: 1) is whitman criticising science here or merely presenting his own ideas?? because after all it all comes down to the way we perceive things right??.. he may find the scientific facts boring and dull but these facts are the ultimately beautiful things for the scientist rite??...2) even if he is not criticising science then he must be presenting his own ideas only..this means he wasnt interested in the scientific facts and figures...so why was he there at the first place?..3)i think he is disgusted with the way the scientist presents and explains the stars and their movements and stuff...he talks about those figures like they dont have any significance..and then 4)when he says "when i sitting heard the astronomer where he lectured with much applause in the lecture room" i feel like hes making fun of all the poeple present there including the scientist..but that is the job a scientist has to do rite??....5) so keeping the above points in mind is he asking the scientist not to present nature in the way that he is doing??? is he asking the scientist not to rob nature of its beauty by presenting it as merely facts and figures?? or he isnt blaming anyone... just saying that he doesnt find the way the scientist presents these figures very appealing?? is he saying that to much of knowledge is bad??

i hope u dont get confused by all thisSmile [:)]..but i really want to grasp at the true meaning behind all this...thanks againSmile [:)]oh n i have registered..me the green eyed monsterWink [;)]

It is silliness to live, when to live is torment: and then have we a prescription to die, when death is our physician.
