A few more questions...

Is there a difference between determinant and article? Are they both considered to be adjectives (as far as parts of speech is concerned)?

As I remember it, articles are considered to be adjectives.

Determinants, on the other hand, are considered by some grammarians to have their own part of speech.

Am I correct? Could anyone rectify my assumptions if I’m mistaken?

In the following sentence:

This is Mr. Brown _________ invention had helped hundreds of disabled people.

A. which

B. that

C. who

D. whose

Why is “whose” the right answer? Could anyone explain this to me in clear, simple terms?

Also, in the following sentence:

Professor Black had us ________ composition every Friday.

A. to write

B. write

C. written

D. wrote

Now according to my book the answer is B. It sounds good to me, but why is A wrong.

Professor Black had us to write composition every Friday.

Or:

My mother had us to eat breakfast every day of the week.

Is it really grammatically wrong?

1-- Articles are a subclass of determiners, and determiners are a subclass of adjectives.

2-- Whose, the possessive form is required, as it modifies the noun 'invention':  whose invention had helped...

3-- Have in this usage (along with make, let) takes the bare infinitive (i.e. no 'to'):  He had us write; Mother had us eat; they made her study;  I let them come; etc.  A 'to' is wrong here.

Thank you very much for the reply. Really well explained.

Beside articles (a, an, the) what else is considered a determinant? I mean, what else belongs in this subclass?

Thanks,

SoP.

Here's one page on Beer <b>DETERMINERS; Googling the word will get you others.

And no extra charge for the beer.

I realized that the definite articles and indefinite articles were the other subclasses or the determiners after I typed my question.

Cheers,

SoP.

PS: As far as the beer is concerned, feel free to charge me as much as you want (as long as it's Chinese beer)
