Can't I say "a fish" without stating its species?

Is "Is this a fish?" incorrect?

No it is not incorrect. For example they offer you a plate of food and you can't figure out whether it is fish or meat so you ask "Is this a fish?" Tourists generally do this. Smile [:)]
