Hi Newguest

To me, "a God" would be a reference to the one and only Supreme Being, and "the God" would be a reference to a specific one of several Supreme Beings.

If the word "God" were not capitalized, my interpretation would be different.

Others may have differing opinions.

So, if I'm thinking of a Catholic God I would say "the God" and if about any God in any religion I would say "a God"???

How about "god" or "gods"???

If you were catholic and you were thinking of Christians' God, I think you wouldn't use any article:

I believe some religions believe that there is more than one god, so we would refer to one of them as "god" and more then one of them as "gods". I hope among the Forum members, there is at least one member who can tell me whether I'm correct.

I am atheist, and when I see "a god" I think one of many.  In this case, I wouldn't capitalize god.  To me, god is a pronoun used in many myths, not a proper noun.  The God might be used as a title in similar sky fairy fables, like Zeus.

If it is one of a number of gods, then "a god"; if it is a single supreme deity, the God.

Just to tell you, the Jainism sect has 24 Gods of worship. So we can have "a God".
