"Sen. Clinton's statement before the Argus Leader editorial board was unfortunate and has no place in this campaign," it said in a statement.

Her campaign first defended the remarks, saying the New York senator had been making a historical parallel.

What's a historical parallel?

Thanks in advance!

Hi,

An event or situation in the past that is similar to a current event or situation. Such a comparison usually provides a better understanding of the present.

Best wishes, Clive

Okay, this is off-topic, but what did that spokesman think was the parallel? We could still be lucky enough to have someone assassinate Obama and so we could take the nomination that way? That has to be an even more bone-headed thing to say that Clinton's original remark!

The parallel they had in mind was that the Democrat primary race is unresolved in June. Clinton also noted that her husband hadn't clinched the nomination until June of 1992.
Even the Clinton campaign isn't incompetent enough to make the parallel you suggest. Then again, who knows?

No, Ray. She said TWO things. One was that her husband hadn't clinched until June, and the other was that Robert Kennedy was assassinated in June (and therefore the other got the nomination). She said it. Apparently she had a momentary lapse. But for her spokesperson to try to justify it is unconscionable.

And of course, the fact that the California primary wasn't until June that year so all those delegates were still in play, while this year the California primary is long past, seems to be lost on her. Not exactly parallel.

Please, whatever you do, don't mistake me for a Clinton defender. Believe me, I'm anything but.
