A lot of???

Hi from Türkiye,

I have known that "a lot of" is only used with affirmative sentences. But in a book I saw this.

I haven't got many CDs = I don't have a lot of CDs

Is that correct?

Jim and Pete fight too much = Jim and Pete have too many fights

Fight is uncountable or countable ,which sentence is correct above?According to a book both are correct.

I don't have a lot of ...seems ok to me.

Jim and Peter fight too much - fight is a verb here, not a noun.

But I have been learning English for seven years and I have never seen this type of uses ,,in all grammar books I have read there was no uses of "a lot of " in negative sentence is given in the grammar books .

This was a strict rule " a lot of " is on ly used in affirmative sentences..

Interesting. I would say that it is an informal structure. If I were writing I probably use 'I don't have many' or 'I don't have much', but it does get used a lot informally.

I've just googled it and come up with 673,000 uses.
