For those reading this the puzzle is.

A farmer has to cross a river one day with his dog, a pig and a bail of straw. However, the only boat available is not big enough for the three of them so he is forced to make several journeys across the river.

The problem facing the farmer is this: if he leaves the pig alone with the straw, it will eat it, and if he leaves the dog alone with the pig, it will kill it.

What does the farmer have to do to get them all safely to the other side?

One solution

First the farmer takes the pig across the river. He goes back to pick up the dog. When he is across he leaves the dog and takes back the pig. Back on the other side he leaves the pig and takes the bail of straw with him. Then hegoes back and picks up the pig then all three items are safely on the other side.

I think there is one more constraint : Only two of them are allowed to travel at a time.

First he takes the pig. The dog won't eat the straw.
Then he takes the dog. The dog WILL eat the pig, who is already on the other side.
So the farmer brings the pig back with him.
Then he takes the straw across. Again, the dog won't eat the straw.
Then he goes back for the pig.
