However, the only boat available is not big enough for the three of them so he is forced to make several journeys across the river. The problem facing the farmer is this: if he leaves the pig alone with the straw, it will eat it, and if he leaves the dog alone with the pig, it will kill it. What does the farmer have to do to get them all safely to the other side? One solution First the farmer takes the pig across the river. He goes back to pick up the dog. When he is across he leaves the dog and takes back the pig. Back on the other side he leaves the pig and takes the bail of straw with him.
