I don't understand this quote..Can someone explain to me what it's saying?

"Doing your best is not good enough, you must do what is necessary."

thanks.

Sometimes our efforts are not enough to do the job, even though we think we have done our best.  We need to push a little harder to reach the goal, often doing more than we thought we were able to do.

This could also be taken as a sarcastic phrase:  you just aren't up to the task.

And often the thing that is necessary to be done is someway illegal or not right.

I don't take that meaning, Zerox. That would be true for "the ends justifies the means." I believe Philip's interpretation is the one intended. Or, as Yoda said, "Try not. Do."

"Doing your best is not good enough." After I read it, I have a slight feeling that it means that however hard you try is not what matters. "You must do what is necessary." What really matters is if what you're doing is right, if you really need what you're doing. The quote tells the reader that before you put everything into what you're doing, you have to make sure if what you're doing is right for you. Otherwise, everything you worked so hard for will be put to waste, whether you like it or not, whether it was a thing of the past or something that simply doesn't work out.
