This really happened to me, and I was pleased to solve the riddle in real time:

Context:  There is a house with two family members.  A father with a bad back, and a mother who is watching her favourite TV show in the bedroom.  The father realizes that one of the three light bulbs of the living room chandelier has to be replaced.  Since he cannot find the ladder, foolish dad moves a table to the centre of the room, puts a chair on top of the table, and then, new bulb in hand, climbs up on top of the chair.  He can only just reach the chandelier, but.....OH NO! All bulbs look the same! He has forgotten which bulb needed to be changed.  Whats´s his best option ?

1. Call his wife to have her switch on the chandelier lights.
2. Climb back down, switch on the lights, memorize the dead bulb and climb back up.
3. Change any one bulb, then climb back down and hope to be lucky.
4. Any other idea?

Maybe it´s too simple a riddle, but try to find the answer while you keep your balance up o that chair!

When I change a bulb I always see what’s wrong. Usually the small spirals wire inside is torn.  So, the daddy can check bulbs and look for that … anyway, there are so different types of light bulbs.

What do you think?

Interesting answer, I hadn't thought of that solution.  And you are obviously right about there being many different types of lightbulbs.

In my case, the solution was to simply touch all the three bulbs.  There should be two hot bulbs and one cold bulb.  The bulb that needs to be changed is the cold one.

Yea, very smart and simple answer! … But I was thinking about your riddle again. If the father realizes that one of the three light bulbs of the living room chandelier has to be replaced, that means that lights are switched on. There wasn’t much light in the room. Why should he switch them off? How could he climb in the dark and change the bulb? If I was him I wouldn’t switch the lights at all. Smile [:)]

I too normally do what Abodeka does.  One can tell whether the bulb is good or bad by looking closely at the filament of the bulb - then again there are so many types of bulbs! Smile [:)]

Usually I prefer to switch off the light in question before I reach for the bulb with my clumsy fingers.  I didn't have the problem of complete darkness, because were other sources of light nearby (a lamp near the sofa).

Good point though.

Mr Patrick, I really like your riddle, because it's from the real life and could work practically. If you don't mind, could you think an other one, please Smile [:)]

If time is not of the essence, sit down on the chair till the wifey gets done with TV programme. Obviously, when she comes out of the bedroom, she can help daddy broken back with the switch.

or

If he had taken a pack of bulbs up the scaling contraption (the table and chair), he can change all three bulbs and be sure to have them glowing.
