Someone asked me that, I looked up on my dictionary but I'd like to confirm with you. We can say

a bottle of beer,        a glass of beer,          a can of beer

but there is not a glass called "tulip" in the English language (there is in because in my country). So

a tulip of beer

is completely wrong. Am I right??

It certainly would be a new one for me.

Barbara, who answers in American English. My housekeeping skills attest to the truth of the second law of thermodynamics: Left to themselves, things get more and more random!

Hi guys,

A stemmed glass, obviously tulip-shaped, wherein the top of the glass pushes out a bit to form a lip in order to capture the head and the body is bulbous

The above site includes this info, plus an illustration.

GG, you obviously need to associate with a better class of beer drinker.

Do you know this joke?

An American goes into a pub in London, England.

American: Bring me an American beer.

Bartender: Sorry, sir, we don't have any.

American: OK, bring me the nearest thing you have to American beer.

The barman brings him a glass of water.

Best wishes, Clive

LOL - If they are thinking about Miller or Bud, I would agree. But at least we serve it COLD!

I'm a bit of a beer snob, so I tend to like the beer from microbreweries. Please don't be disappointed in me, but I tend to drink it from the bottle.

But regardless of the shape of the glass, would you still call it "a tulip of beer"?

But would this sentece be accepted in a regular basis?? In which places would somebody order a "tulip" of beer??

Hi,

But would this sentece be accepted in a regular basis?? No, definitely not.

In which places would somebody order a "tulip" of beer?? Nowhere, really.

Best wishes, Clive.

Just to sum up, so there is a glass called tulip, but no way we can order a "tulip of beer".

Thank you very much.

In a pub in the UK, you'd still ask for a pint (or a half) of beer if you wanted bitter, or a pint of lager if you want what Americans call beer.  Lager is served cold, often iced.  Traditionally bitter is served at cellar temperature, but not iced - despite long-standing American jibes it is definitely not served warm. Big Smile [:D]

The distinction is beginning to blur a bit with cans of beer and bottles of beer (which can be lager or bitter).
