This was a serious test I took last Saturday. My answer was "A) complied". But today I've learned that the correct answer was "C) relented". Isn't "complied" also possible here? Thanks in advance.

Relented is the only one that makes sense here.

complied suggests that he was breaking the rules previously.

We comply with rules, but we relent after arguing something.
