1. Arcane: secret; mysterious; known only to the initiated.  What does 'known only to the initiated' mean?

2. Aurora: pertaining to the aurora borealis. Does it mean lights in earth's northern hemisphere?

'known only to the initiated' means that something is known only to people with special knowledge, to those who know the secret of a group or religion etc.
