Could you me if there is a rule about when we use the sufffix -able and when we use -ible?
Also, when adding -able, in what case do we leave out the final letter e?

Thank you very much.

Wow! I have struggled with those endings since I first learned to write. If it weren't for the squiggly red lines in Word, I'd probably spell most of them wrong still, but this was a simple rule that I'd never heard before and will be of great help.

Thanks so much for posting that, Mr. M!

May God (or whoever) bless you, Mr. M!  I once knew a Latin teacher who claimed that the ending depended on the past participle of the Latin from which it came.  I never figured that to be plausible, because not all words come from Latin.  This makes so much sense!  Thanks.

Broadly speaking, if the root word is a complete verb like 'break' or ends with an 'e' as in 'debate', then the ending is 'able'. If not, the ending is 'ible'.

Naturally there are exceptions such as flexible and collapsible but this 'rule' is pretty consistent.
