thank you so much for this!  I've been searching for why English, Spanish, French use the plural 's' but not Italian, which retains its closeness to the Latin.  Anything more you can add?

Interesting.  However technically number seven does not work because it could potentially cause confustion.  Replace the word "book" with "world," for example.

1) There are only two of them left in all the world.

Though admittedly such phrases are on their way out, being replaced by phrases such as, "in the whole world."

No, Jones is the subject - the hand is the direct object.

Joes is doing the action; the hand is receiving the action.
