Can I say,

(a) His hobby is painting the pictures.
(b) His hobby is painting.
(c) His hobby is painting the scenery.

If you remove 'the' from (a) and (c), all three are correct.  'The' is not necessary because 'hobby' indicates general rather than specific.  [He likes soup (in general) ~ He likes the soup (that you have served tonight).]
