What do you think about SPEAKING English and FORMAL English?  Do you think that speaking English can replace formal English?

I think the two are both completely necessary.

I hate to think of a time in the future when you get instructions on how to install something and it says "U shd C a smll hole n a lrg hole. its important tht U pt the wire thru the smll 1."

Barbara, who answers in American English. My housekeeping skills attest to the truth of the second law of thermodynamics: Left to themselves, things get more and more random!

Unfortunately we're getting nearer and nearer to this kind of situations. Everyone thinks they are cool if they mispell and shorten words, and I'm kind of sorry to have to admit that it is mostly due to young people if this is happening.

Unforutnately, some of these younger people are finding that their boss doesn't think it's very "cool" to not be abe to write coherent sentences in a work setting. I understand that every letter counts while texting, and I've stopped showing any outward signs of dismay when I get an e-mail at work using "u" (and even I will write "thx" sometimes), but the day a marketing piece says "u will luv our product....it meets all ur needs" is the day I hope I am already six feet under.

I hope you will not be, as this 'habit' is spreading really fast.

I think both kinds are necessary. One can't be formally all his/her time. And also the formal language is needed to be used in many official situations.

Spoken and Fromal English are needed.
