Absolutely Ridiculous "Montage" Debate!

My father and I were watching a reality show when I made the comment that it was scripted and fake. He then said, "Yes, the show is a montage."

I asked him to specify, since montage has neither a positive or negative connotation. He disagreed, stating that within the context of our conversation, it could be understood that his use of montage meant that the show was arranged to warp and misconstrue what really happened.

In other words, he believes that montage means to lie and warp reality, giving the word an inherently negative meaning.

I believe that the word isn't inherently negative and you must specify whether the montage is showing truth or a false reality.

And thus, our debate began...

Despite the help of a dictionary, he refused to believe me.

And so, I come to you to solve this stupid debate!

Your help would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

Without consulting a dictionary: I wouldn't infer any negative connotation if I heard the word montage. I would take it to mean several elements joined together, like an assemblage.
