We are interviewing candidates for the position of accountant. I thought that there should be "an" preceding "accountant" because it is a count noun. a singular count noun can not be used without any articles before it.  We are interviewing candidates of the position of an accountant.

Accountant here is a job title so does not need an article. The person who get the job will be an accountant, but they will work in the role of accountant.

Think of the sentence 'They are voting to decide who should be president'. You wouldn't put 'They are voting to decide who should be a president.'.

Thank you Nona de Brit.

Can all profession words be used way, as job titles? the position of professor, the job of nurse?  If they are used as job titles, do they become uncountable nouns?

In the case of "president', can I write this way? They are voting to decide who should be President. I thought when p is in capital, this is a correct sentence. Please explain to me more, everyone. Thanks.
