I am addressing a letter to a Brother John Doe (not real name of course).

In the greeting field of a letter, would I write:

Dear Mr. Doe,
or
Dear Bro. Doe,
or Dear Brother Doe,

Help!

The proper way to address someone who is a member of the clergy is:

The Reverend John Doe
1222 Riverside Dr
New York, NY 22918

Dear Mr. Doe:

If the person has a doctor's degree, the address is:

The Reverend Dr. John Doe
1222 Riverside Dr
New York, NY 22918

Dear Dr. Doe:

The title Reverend is never abbreviated and is properly preceded by the article The followed by the first name or initial of the person referred to.

Incorrect: Rev. Doe; Reverend Doe
