Chose the correct answer for the following and say why you chose the answer,also write what you are being tested on?

Adam speaks excellent French,but he doesn't speak very.........................English.

a) better  b) good  c) well    d) best

The answer is good but i can't explain why i chose the answer....

a-- very doesn't modify comparative adjectives
b-- THE RIGHT ANSWER
c-- well is an adverb, but an adjective is required
d-- the superlative would require an article: the very best
