I couldn't understand the red part in the following headline. What does ''bid'' mean in the context of the below sentence?

DILI (AFP) - International troops stepped up patrols in East Timor's capital Tuesdayas President Jose Ramos-Horta recuperated in Australia after anassassination bid doctors said he was lucky to survive.
