Then or afterwards? Assist school or go to school?

Hi!

Could you please tell me whether these sentences are right or not?

I went 8 years to primary school and then I went 4 years to commercial school..

I went 8 years to primary school and afterwards I went 4 years to commercial school..

I  assited 8 years primary school and then I assited 4 years commercial school..

I assited  8 years primary school and afterwards I assited  4 years commercial school..

The structure should be  "I went to/assisted in primary school for eight years and then/afterwards I went to/assisted in commercial school for four years".
