Which sentences do you prefer?

1a. Transatlantic cruises became popular as early as in the nineteenth century.

1b. Transatlantic cruises became popular already in the nineteenth century.

2a. I did it as early as in the afternoon.

I don't like in after as early as, and these search results in published literature confirm my preference:
