We sometimes say, "He put on airs," which means he pretended to be better than he was.  But as your quote stands, the intent is that the confidence was genuine.

Oh well,

Context will sometimes suggest that an "air" is only bravado, or pretense; but the expression, "air of confidence" doesn't speculate on it's genuinness.  At least, that's my sense of it.
