MOCK: IMITATE:
A. satirize: charm
B. condense: summarize
C. placate: assuage
D. adapt: duplicate
E. taunt: challenge

(Choose a pair that expresses a relationship most similar to that of the given pair.)

Mock means to imitate; placate means to assuage. So I chose C. But the answer is E. What do you think? Thank you.

In this type of exercise the relationship is almost never as simple as that the first word "means" the second.  You need to find more than that.
Mocking is an exaggerated form of imitating.  It is imitation mixed with disparagement.
This is the same relationship seen in E.  Taunting is an exaggerated form of challenging.  An element of disparagement is also present.

Oh That's right. Thank you CJ. Smile [:)] But does "to taunt" suggest "to challenge"? I never saw it this way. And does "to defy" suggest "no respect"? I see an antonym like this:

VENERATION:
A. derision
B. defiance
I chose A. But some others insisted on B.

Yes, I can certainly see taunting being a form of challenging.
And I would choose A for the second one.  Veneration and derision are more or less in the same category of words.  Underlying them are fairly simple feelings, positive and negative, respectively.  Defiance is a more complex idea involving a challenge to authority.

I think mocking is a form of imitation and a taunt is a form of challenge.
