Our ancestors found out that animals smelled and tasted better when placed inside the crackling orange flame.
Our ancestors found out that animals smell and taste better when placed inside the crackling orange flame.

Could you please tell me which sentence is correct? Should it be 'smelled' or 'smell', 'tasted' or 'taste'?

Thank you.

Best wishes,

Either is possible, but in this case, I would use the past tense-- it is more in keeping with 'the orange flame', which roots the statement more firmly in the past.
