Hi,
I don't understand what refers to John Steinbeck on his "Travels with Charley" when is talking about keeping Charly from hunters:
'The radios warned against carrying a white handkerchief. Too many hunters seeing a flash of white have taken it for the tail of a running deer and CURED A HEAD COLD with a single shot'
Thanks in advance, Jo.

He is making a joke. A radical cure for a head cold (a bad cold) would be being shot dead.

I'm not sure I'd consider it a "joke", but it certainly is a vivid image and a clever reference to the aforementioned handkerchief!
