Everyone needs someone to look up to, someone they can respect and want to emulate. Sorry, matey, but that someone is you. Tough call I know. If you think heroes are so out of date, old-fashioned and redundant, then think again. (is there a difference?) "matey" = colloquialism = friend/buddy/mate. Tough call - comes from poker. It is a hard decision to take. So out of date, old-fashioned and redundant = Not much difference, and used in this way to reinforce the statement that heroes are no longer considered valid.
You have also got to go beyond that and raise their stakes. If you are going to build a team machine, then do it in a DeLorean.(what's it?) An expensive car; see here:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/De_Lorean_DMC-12 You have got to look the part, act the part, do the part – method acting here: feel the manager, think the manager, be the manager. (paraphrase it)In order to be a manager, you must act as if you are a manager. "Method acting" is an actors' technique which is based on the actor thinking himself into the character he is playing, creating a background and world for the character, and replicating what he believes is the emotional state of the character.
The best bit is that if you learn when to be serious and when to let up and find humour in a situation it will have a magical effect on those around you."What is best of all if you do all these things"
And if you work in a place where serious and uptight is the norm, here is a secret just for you: no one knows what is going on inside your head. No one. Just so long as the exterior is what they want, the inside can be whatever you want. You can feel and think what you like in your mind - People will only see your behaviour.
(what's mooners, downturn in business?) mooners = people who bare their bottoms at other people [definitely not polite OR people who moon about, not getting anywhere in life. Context would be helpful.
Are Grease & Casablanca movies? Yes - very famous movies: Grease >> http://tinyurl.com/2a8nhx Casablanca >> http://tinyurl.com/2dkc3
Not letting it get to you doesn't mean not to caring or not taking pride and pleasure in what you do. No, it means putting things into context so you can go home and switch off. Don't let it eat away at you, make you unhealthily stressed or overwrought.
Switch off = relax.
Don't let it eat away at you = don't keep thinking about it.
I once worked for a senior manager who, to all outward appearances, wanted my team to be successful and productive but who seemed to be hampering my ever move. Whenever I wanted to make changes that would drastically improve our figures( does it stand for profit?) he hesitated and delayed and would not make a decision
He appeared to want the team to be successful, but in fact seemed to be preventing this from happening.
our figures = our records of our sales during each month.stay ahead of the game

or activity than the people or companies with whom you are competing.
