The sentence is correct. It's customary to mention only the general noun (dog, lion, cat) because you are talking about the species.
The female of cat is "tabby" and the masculine is "tomcat".
Hope this helps!

JT: Not one written by an ENL, I'd wager, Hanuman. Are you sure you've typped it correctly?

Dog and lion are names for a type of animal. It refers to all in a general sense; young and old, male and female. There are more specific terms to describe gender and relative age. Some animal groups have more specific names than others, depending on how "important" they are.
Horse
Male - stud/stallion
Female - mare
young male - colt
young female - filly
male that is neutered - gelding
What is THE female of the "cat" family?

A couple of comments:
1. 'Stud' is not synonymous with 'stallion'. A stud is a stallion kept for breeding purposes.
2. 'Tabby' for 'female cat' is slightly misleading. 'Tabby' also simply = a 'brindled cat'.
3. 'Tomcat' means a male cat that hasn't been neutered. (If in doubt, smell it.)

"Animal like dogs, ... give birth to their young ones." I wondered if "animal" should be "animals"? Is "animal" a count or a non-count noun, or it can be either? Many thanks.
