Although I've spent some time searching through my own dictionaries and online, I've been unable to find an antonym of the word 'misanthrope' - surely there's a word for a lover of mankind - please can anyone help?

The only word that comes to my mind is "philanthropist".
I don't think it's the exact opposite of misanthropist, though.

I don't know if it's possible to have an exact opposite of anything really.

Anyway, philanthropist is likely the best antonym you're going to get.
