Consider the request in A., and answer the question in B.

A. We want to substitute apples for pears.
B. After the substitution takes place, which do you have, apples or pears?

Note, Both answers are acceptable, so please don't pine over the question. I'm not looking for the answer; I'm investigating semantic anology, so it's important to me that you base your choice on your intuition, be it native or non-native. Thanx

Thank you for your speedy replies!

Julie, as I mentioned, both answers are acceptable, so please don't feel singled out here, but since "apples" was what the majority on this forum chose, I'd like to ask you why you chose "pears", or rather if you could explain to me how you read:

"We want to substitute apples for pears."

Looking forward to your reply.
