Hi,

I have some sentences below and you tell me whether my version and the reasoning that goes along with it are correct?

1. Please use the "How to do" template to trace the letters.

Q1: Here, "How to do" is a kind of an adjective?

Q2: Is "the" an article for the template?

Q3: Can you put just about any logical words (or a phrase) there in parentheses to define or specify the "template"?

2. Please use (the?) "How to do" templates to trace the letters.

Q1: Is "How to do" an adjective for templates?

Q2: Do you think, I need to include "the" in front of the phrase in parentheses?

Q3: Do I have to rewrite the phrase in parentheses? May be capitalize some or hyphenate some?

1-- yes
2-- yes
3-- yes
4-- yes
5-- probably
6-- I presume you mean the phrase in quotation marks.  I would hyphenate How-to-do when it is an adjective.

Thank you.

In question 5, it asked whether one has to put "the' in front of the phrase "How to do" templates and my Q now is what other instances can you give to me to exemplify the minority to the general rule?

Hi,

1. Please use the "How to do" template to trace the letters.

Q1: Here, "How to do" is a kind of an adjective? Yes, kind of.

Q2: Is "the" an article for the template? Yes.

Q3: Can you put just about any logical words (or a phrase) there in parentheses to define or specify the "template"? Yes. But use quotes, not parentheses. Don't make the words too long. Don't do this a lot, and don't do it in formal writing.

2. Please use (the?) "How to do" templates to trace the letters.

Q1: Is "Hhow to do" an adjective for templates? Yes.

Q2: Do you think, I need to include "the" in front of the phrase in parentheses? Yes. It sounds like you want to be specific.

Q3: Do I have to rewrite the phrase in parentheses? No. May be capitalize some or hyphenate some?  No. Actually, I'd prefer not to capitalize the 'h'.

Best wishes, Clive
