Hi,

These were headlines in today's evening news.

Headline 1: Saddam hanging will not end violence in Iraq.(Bush)

Headline 2: Saddam held to account, says UK

Headline 3: Anas Altikriti, the British Muslim Initiative spokesman, said the "sad reality" was that the verdict could mean the Iraqi people would "never have their day in court".

Headline 4: "If he was indeed executed before the Iraqi people could find out what really happened over the last 30 or 40 years that would be another great tragedy," he said.

Headline 5: Scottish National Party (SNP) leader Alex Salmond - a longstanding critic of the government's military campaign - said it was a "very understandable verdict given the terms of the court".

Question 1: This question refers to headline 1. I think correct version of headline 1 should be ''Saddam's hanging will not end violence in Iraq.(Bush)''. Am I right?

Question 2: This question refers to headline 2. I don't undrstand the meaning of headline 2. So please help me.

Question 3: This question refers to headline 3. I couldn't understand this headline. please explain me the meaning of this headline, in particular the meaning of "never have their day in court".

Question 4: This question refers to headline 4. I don't understand the meaning of this headline and I think correct version of this headline should be ''If he was indeed executed before the Iraqi people, then people could find out what really happened over the last 30 or 40 years that would be another great tragedy," he said.

Question 5: This question refers to headline 5. What does that mean ''very understandable verdict given the terms of the court".

Sincerely,

vijay

It’s a difficult question for any man to answer… Whether to follow his dreams no matter what… Or to give in slowly and let life lead you where it will.

Headline 1: Saddam hanging will not end violence in Iraq.(Bush)  This is a headline, so grammar rules are often not followed.

Headline 2: Saddam held to account, says UK " To be held to account" means that the person has been made to answer for his/her crimes

Headline 3: Anas Altikriti, the British Muslim Initiative spokesman, said the "sad reality" was that the verdict could mean the Iraqi people would "never have their day in court".  Is this really a headline - looks more like the start of a report. The person speaking means that only a small part of  the crimes against the Iraqi people were covered in this trial, and that there were many others which now will not be brought into public discussion.

Headline 4: "If he was indeed executed before the Iraqi people could find out what really happened over the last 30 or 40 years, that would be another great tragedy," he said. A comma after years makes better sense of the sentence. It is a continuation of the above statement.

Headline 5: Scottish National Party (SNP) leader Alex Salmond - a longstanding critic of the government's military campaign - said it was a "very understandable verdict given the terms of the court". He is implying that the court had no alternative verdict with the brief given to the judges.
