Can someone tell me if "as long as" in the above sentence is used correctly?

It sounds very odd, because the speaker/listener should know the date of the beginning of the new semester.  As long as indicates that the speaker is unsure as to the precise length of time, and is giving '20 days' as an outside estimate only.
