Hi,

Is the following sentence correct?

I usually take a cab home when I leave office after 10pm, as it takes me around 2 hours to reach home at that time.

Thanks,

MG.

'At that time' is not needed. The rest of the sentence is good as is.

Hi, whether "at that time" is needed depends upon on what the role of 'as' is in the sentence.

Do you mean that it would take you two hours to reach home by some other form of public transport, so that's why you usually take a cab?

If so, then you really need to add an extra word or two to the sentence, e.g.

I usually take a cab home when I leave the office after 10 pm, otherwise it takes me around 2 hours to reach home at that time.

Thanks folks.

What I am trying to imply here is that if I leave the ofifce at 10.00pm and use the regular mode of transport, it takes me 2 hours to reach home.
Is 'at that time' still unncessary?

Hi again,

I usually take a cab home when I leave the office after 10 pm, otherwise it takes me around 2 hours to reach home (at that time).

In the sentence above, you could omit 'at that time' and still retain the meaning, but personally I would include it as it gives emphasis to the preceding 'after 10 pm'.

That said, other native speakers of English probably would omit 'at that time' here; it's a matter of personal preference.

Hi,

I usually take a cab home when I leave office after 10pm, as it takes me around 2 hours to reach home at that time.

To me, more natural wording is this.
I usually take a cab when I leave the office after 10pm, as otherwise at that time of night it would take me around 2 hours to get home.

Best wishes, Clive

Hi Clive,

Yes, that's fine too, although I'm slightly uneasy about the coupling of "usually take a cab", with "it would take me". If "always" were substituted for "usually" I'd be happier with the construction, but the use of "usually" implies that sometimes public transport is used, which serves to validate "it takes me".(;)) Wink
