Aunt Betty is baking our favorite dish for the upcoming family reunion.

Hi,

I wonder what it looks like to bake dishes because we only fry or make dishes. What does "baking our dish" look like? Thanks.

Aunt Betty prepares the dish by combining the ingredients as described in the recipe, putting them into an oven-proof container, sometimes circular, sometimes rectangular.  She turns on the oven, waits for it to reach the correct temperature, places the container and its contents into the hot oven and closes the door of the oven.  When the proper amount of time has passed, Aunt Betty removes the dish from the oven and places it on the table where the family is gathered, and everybody serves themselves from the common container by taking the amount they want and putting it on their own plate.  And then they eat it.

The favorite dish might be "Macaroni and Cheese" or "Corn Pudding" or "Candied Yams" or "Scalloped Potatoes and Ham", or "Tuna Noodle Casserole", or "Chicken Parmesan", or "Apple Pie", or "Peach Cobbler", or "Tamale Pie", or  ....

Use the internet to look up the recipes if you're interested.  Smile

Thanks, Jim, for your patience and kindness.

Got it.

I thought the dishes you mentioned were pies, cakes, or desserts. Now I know they can be dishes.

Baked combinations of ingredients other than desserts like cakes and pies are often known collectively as casseroles.
