1. Black religion was in part a protest movement – a protest against a system and a society that was ____ designed to ____ the dignity of a segment of God’s creation.

A)       explicitly …foster  B) deliberately…demean

I chose A, but answer was B. Black religion protested against a society which was designed to foster/support God, that’s what I think. But how come it’s B which is completely opposite.

2. "The word ‘plastic”in the Parsons quotation is being used." Why we need “being” here? Can we just say: is used? When do we use “being’?

'the dignity of a sector of God's creation' refers to blacck people, not God, so that fact that something was protesting against this means that b) has to be something negative.
