Hello,

I am going to start private lessons at a Berlitz school soon. It seems to me that taking private lessons is an effective way to learn a foreign language. But what about the Berlitz method? I have heard it is based on the 'Direct method'  which has its foundations in the 1950's. Could you please tell your opinions of or experiences about this school? It seems to be very expensive, at least - or 'daylight robbery' would be a better word. But let's see...

I would also be interested to see what people think about Berlitz and the methods that they use.

Taking private lessons is an effective way to learn a foreign language but make sure that your tutor is experienced and/or qualified. Also sometimes you may not 'click' with your tutor and your way of learning might not be compatible with their teaching methods. If you haven't signed up yet see if they offer a free or reduced price class so that you can see what your assigned tutor is like.

Enjoy your lessons, I hope that they work for you.

The 'Direct method' is actually much older... a century-old method.  It was established in the early 20th century.  But this doesn't mean  it wouldn't work for me. This is what Wikipedia says about it:

"The Direct Method, sometimes also called Natural Method, is a method for teaching foreign languages that refrains from using the learners' native language and just uses the target language. It was established in Germany and France around 1900. Characteristic features of the direct method are

  • teaching vocabulary through pantomiming, realia and other visuals
  • teaching grammar by using an inductive approach (i.e. having learners find out rules through the presentation of adequate linguistic forms in the target language)
  • centrality of spoken language (including a native-like pronunciation)
  • focus on question-answer patterns
  • teacher-centerednes"
