Tupac definitely belongs at number one. Eminem writes clever lyrics but most a good majority of his songs are cheesey. There are alot of lyricists who top him because, although ems' lines are clever, he does not use very many litterary elements. A good lyricist writes songs that sound like they are about one thing but if you put some thought into them are about something completely different. Listen to a rapper named cormega who, in my oppinion, is hands down the best lyricist ever. Not the best ever but, to me, a distant first lyrically. Written and freestyling. Eminem is meerely top 5 or 10.

I think that we have covered the best rap artists if you run through everyones quotes. I think that we missed someone out who contributed massivly to hip hop/rap - Which is Chuck D.
I think we need to define what we mean by greatest, eg . .
Flow - Biggie, Nas or Mob Deep.
Ability to make people stop and listen Chuck D
Ability to make people stop and listen and then act Tupac
Best story teller - oh gotta be Biggie
Best Selling Well love them or hate them 50 Cent or Jay Z - I would say 50 Cent coz other than the beatles no one else has had 4 track in the billboard chart at high positions at the same time and his stats for record sales on Get Rich monster anything Jay Z has done.
Greatest Rap About Anything U Like MC - I think Em and he has killer freestyles.
Most Intense - DMX
Mosty Promising Talent/Musical Ability - Mr West
Longest Serving Talent - KRS1 - Even some of the greats have bitten his *** over the decades.
There are loads of others out there that are great from past and present like Easy E, Big Pun, Big L, Big Daddy Kane ICE T.
My personal has to be BIGGIE - He freestyle was killer, his story telling always kept you begging for the next line, smooth flows weather it was quick spitting or slow'd up and live he was in a league of his own.
Kp - Out

Ja-Mez wrote: | Anonymous wrote: | I definetly say Tupac is the best. Explanation:
He had a reason for his music, because his lyrics weren't about
ho's or cars but things that happen and really draw you in. Kids to
white boys to even old people liked Tupac. That's what made him as real
as he was. And he always was down to die for what he represented.
So my top 10:
- Tupac
- Eminem
- Nas
- Dr.Dre
- Young Buck
- Kanye West
- Snoop Dogg
- LL Cool J
- Lloyd Banks
- 50 Cent (when he had serious lyrics)

sorry, exaclty when did 50 Cent have serious lyrics? And to the rest of
you prattling on about how other people are stupid to put Nas so high,
and then put 50 in your top 10--that makes me laugh, because DO YOU
FEEL THE IRONY?! 50 should be nowhere near your top 100, even--I've
said this about 80 times in 40 different places on this forum.
And to all the Nas haters, find about an hour and a half of free time,
and just listen to Illmatic, beginning to end. Forget God's Son,
Nastramadus, Stillmatic....just listen to Illmatic. If you can't
appreciate something so beautiful, if after listening to Illmatic you
still believe fools like Shaq--SHAQ?! Which anonymous fool put Shaq
there?--or 50 or Lloyd Banks or Young Buck or Mike Jones are better
than Nas, you really can't appreciate rap.

When did 50 have serious lyrics? How about you check out everything
PRIOR TO and INCLUDING Get Rich or Die Tryin'... you want to see him
shine lyrically? Check out his album under TrackMaster, Power of the
Dollar. That album is FIRE and is an instant classic for 50. 50 isn't
the best rapper by far, but he has the potential to be without a doubt.
You gotta understand that getting rich in this rap *** doesn't mean
you're lyrical, it means you're mainstream. Getting rich means you spit
lyrics that people can understand and lipsync. When you start gettin to
metaphoric like Canibus, you're bound to fall off. 50 is mainstream
because he wants $, and once he's satisfied that greed of money, I can
guarantee you that he will get back to his lyric roots and he will grow
as a rapper. If he survives all this beefs, you will see 50 become one
of the greatest rappers ever.

2. Nas

5. A Tribe Called Quest
ok go listen to a few songs: Almost anything by 2pac, all of illmatic and ether on stillmatic, Rock Bottom and I'm Shady, Eric B. is President and Let the Rhythm Hit 'Em, Can I Kick It and Excursions.
