This is the better/best of the two options.

Which one is the right answer? Why?

The answer lies in how many options you have.

Good option
better option
best option

Hi Sooris,

This is the best of the two options is the right answer .. regarding your question why .. I don't have deep knowledage in English Grammar since I am an ESL student .. however, I can say from my point of view that the reason why we use best in this situation is becuase of the comparsion .. in other words, when you have two options and you choose one then the one you choose is the best because having two options means that both of them are good to choose but one of them is absolutely the best to choose. E.g. I have two friends (a friend means someone good to you) but one of them is my best friend.

I wish I could help you Smile [:)]

e. E.g. I have two friends (a friend means someone good to you) but one of them is my best friend. A best friend might also be your only friend. In this collocation, "best" does not follow the normal rule. In comparatives, one= good; one of two = better; one of three = best.

This is the better of the two options. (As Feebs said, 'good, better, best'.)

Since there are two options, use 'better'. If three or more options, use 'best'.

WARNING: I feel I have to say that all of the answers were prescriptive answers. The "better" of the two is the correct prescriptive answer, the one you need if you are going to take some test like TOEFL or something.  Smile [:)]

Hi Kooyeen

Do you mean "This is the best of the two options" is grammatically correct?
