 Can I write,

(a) Last Saturday was a bright sunny / bright,sunny day. John's father bought a bicycle for him as a birthday present / birthday's present.  

 (b) Last Saturday was John's birthday.

You can put the comma: a bright, sunny day.  As a birthday present.  (Also okay: bought him a bicycle as a birthday present.)
