The black and yellow (ball / balls)

Should the subject "ball" be plural since there is more than 1 ball?

Yes, indeed.  But we will still be confused as to whether they are solid-coloured or bi-coloured.

If you have more than one ball, balls is correct.

1 ball                                 example:          The black and yellow ball is easy to see.

2 or more balls                   example:          The black and yellow balls are easy to see.
