The spirit of competition was already there in Robert. Ned Roper
was always able to bring it out -- make Robert show that that spirit
was within him. This is a typical use of bring out.
All students have talent; a good teacher can bring out the talent in his students.
Also, to make stand out (to the eye, to the ear, etc.).
The
orchestra conductor wanted the players to bring out the melody line in
the bass. The chef used spices that helped to bring out the taste
of the mushrooms better.
Normally one brings about a change -- produces a change. Ned could not have
produced the spirit of competition in anyone.
Many social changes were brought about by the industrial revolution.
