But if it happens ...?

Hi

David Haye is insisting that he will make a comeback, if he gets a chance against any of the Klitschko brothers but Lennox Lewis believes Haye will simply waste his time even if he gets a chance against Vitali. Lewis suggested Haye should win a couple of fights before taking on Vitali and if the Brit does so, he will train him for Vitali. ........

Lewis told The Mirror, “Now Haye’s talking about fighting Vitali, but what is he going to do any differently against the better Klitschko? If he jumps straight back in against Vitali, he would be wasting his time. He needs to beat a couple of guys first to build his confidence. But if it happens….. sure, I’ll train him. You can teach an old dog new tricks. But he will need to prepare to get hurt.

Does "but if it happens" mean that if he fights a couple of other guys he will train him?

Does it mean he will need to prepare to get hurt during the actual fight or during his preparations for the fight?
