Question: when someone says he expects your contribution "by August 2008", does he mean the deadline is on the 1st of August or on the 31st?
Thanks a lot.

Hello Anon,

My comment,

I would think that the deadline, at the very latest, is 1st of  August if you said "by August" but this doesn't mean that you can't pay on 23rd of July. Smile

Ps: Make a comparison between until and by. You can use search box on the right above.

by August 2008  - Deadline = 1st August - some might argue 31st July.

by the end of August 2008 - Deadline = 31st August

"by August 2008"
It's not clear. "By the morning / the afternoon / tomorrow" are other examples of this lack of clarity.
