This is Rotter.

A UN humanitarian envoy is due in Burma to try to persuade the ruling junta to grant more access to UN workers to help with the cyclone relief efforts.

John Holmes will carry a letter from UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon to Burma's leader, Than Shwe, who has refused to answer Mr Ban's calls.

Burma says some 78,000 people have died and 56,000 are missing since Cyclone Nargis hit the country on 2 May.

--

Burmese leader has refused to answer Mr Ban's calls. Does this mean he refused to talk to Mr Ban on the phone?

It maybe Mr Ban has called on Burmese leaders to grant more access to UN workers to help the cyclone victims.

Hi Rotter

I hope you don't mind my pointing out your incorrect use of maybe. You had the same mistake in an earlier question and that convinced me it isn't a lapse of concentration. Maybe is kanske in Swedish. May be is two words: He may be right.

But: Maybe/Perhaps he knows it.

Cheers

This is Rotter again.

Cool Breeze, I am delighted when you pointed out my mistakes. I want you and all the others to point out each and every mistake I make here.

However, I can't understand the mistake I made here.

May is an auxiliary verb.

1. Cool Breeze may have been to Sweden.  [ Here 'may' is an modal verb.]

2.  Cool Breeze is rich/poor.

3. Cool Breeze may be rich/poor. [ Here too 'may' is an modal verb.]

 Maybe is an adverb.

I wrote 'It maybe Mr Ban has called on Burmese leaders to grant more access ...

[ The above maybe is not an adverb. Is that the mistake?

Cool Breeze kanske har varit i Sverige.

Cool Breeze är rik/fattig.

Kanske Cool Breeze är rik/fattig.

> It maybe Mr Ban has called on Burmese leaders to grant more access to UN workers to help the cyclone victims.

Bad English.

Use:

Maybe [i.e. perhaps] Mr Ban has called on Burmese leaders to grant more access to UN workers to help the cyclone victims.

or:

It may be that Mr Ban has called on Burmese leaders to grant more access to UN workers to help the cyclone victims.<>
